Schools, trusts and CIF programmes

Victorian red-brick school building with a clock tower

Supporting education consultants, schools and academy trusts with the delivery of Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) and wider estate improvement projects. From electrical and mechanical upgrades to fire safety and refurbishment works, we provide coordinated, compliance-led project delivery tailored to the operational needs of each school.

Common problems

  • Challenging Project Programmes

Balancing construction activities with school holidays, term dates and operational requirements demands careful planning and realistic programmes.

  • Communication & Progress Reporting

Clear communication, regular progress updates and early identification of potential issues are essential to effective project delivery.

  • Coordinating Multiple Disciplines

Projects involving mechanical, electrical, fire safety and building works require effective coordination between specialist trades and contractors.

  • Quality Assurance & Handover

Inspection, testing, certification and handover documentation must be properly coordinated to support a structured project completion.

Our approach combines careful planning, coordinated delivery and clear communication to help manage these challenges throughout the project.

What we deliver

We deliver mechanical, electrical, fire safety and building refurbishment projects across education estates, either as individual work packages or as coordinated multidisciplinary projects.

Acting as Principal Contractor where appointed, we manage specialist trades, programme delivery, site operations and quality assurance, providing consultants and schools with a single point of responsibility throughout the construction phase.

We support education consultants with competitive tender quotations and, where selected as the proposed contractor for a funding submission, provide supporting construction programmes, site logistics plans, project methodologies and risk registers.

Project capabilities

  • Electrical infrastructure and distribution upgrades
  • Complete and phased electrical rewires
  • Fire detection, alarm and emergency lighting systems
  • Fire door replacement and installation
  • Fire stopping and compartmentation improvements
  • Heating, ventilation and domestic water system upgrades
  • Suspended ceilings and internal refurbishment works

Pre-construction planning

Effective project delivery starts before construction begins. Our pre-construction processes establish the programme, site arrangements, safety procedures and coordination required for working within operational education environments.

  1. Project Planning & Site Logistics

Development of construction programmes, site setup arrangements, access routes, working areas and phased delivery plans appropriate to each school.

  2. Health, Safety & Safeguarding

Preparation and review of relevant risk assessments, method statements, safeguarding arrangements and site-specific procedures to manage construction activities safely.

  3. CDM Compliance & Construction Phase Planning

Where appointed as Principal Contractor, we prepare and maintain the Construction Phase Plan, coordinating health and safety arrangements in accordance with CDM 2015.

Safeguarding & site safety

Working within operational schools requires careful planning, effective safeguarding arrangements and controlled construction activities. Our project teams coordinate site access, segregation, working hours and communication with school representatives to protect pupils, staff and visitors while minimising disruption to education.

We recognise the importance of safeguarding within educational environments. Our personnel hold Enhanced DBS checks where applicable, with construction areas managed through controlled access, appropriate segregation and safeguarding procedures agreed with the school.

  • Controlled Access & Site Segregation

Construction areas are managed through appropriate hoarding, barriers, designated access routes and safeguarding arrangements agreed with the school.

  • Communication & Coordination

Regular progress updates, look-ahead programmes and coordination with school representatives help manage access, upcoming activities and potential disruption.

  • Supervised every shift

A named supervisor is on site whenever we are working, and areas are cleaned at the end of each day.

  • Flexible & Phased Working

Construction programmes incorporate phased delivery, out-of-hours working and school holiday periods where appropriate, with disruptive activities carefully coordinated.

Our delivery approach

Every school presents different operational challenges. We develop project-specific construction programmes that coordinate working areas, specialist trades and school activities, allowing works to progress efficiently while minimising disruption to teaching and learning.

  1. Agree the Project Programme

We work with the consultant and school to establish a realistic construction programme, taking account of term dates, access requirements, operational priorities and key milestones.

  2. Plan & Coordinate Working Areas

Construction activities are organised into appropriate phases or work zones, with site segregation, access arrangements and sequencing tailored to the project.

  3. Manage & Monitor Progress

Our project management team coordinates specialist trades, monitors progress against the agreed programme and communicates upcoming activities and potential challenges.

  4. Inspect, Test & Hand Over

Completed works are subject to appropriate quality inspections, testing and commissioning, with individual areas handed back progressively where the project allows.

  5. Provide Structured Project Handover

Relevant certification, as-installed information, operation and maintenance documentation and completion records are coordinated and provided in accordance with project requirements.

Compliance

Compliance is central to how we deliver projects. From pre-construction planning and statutory duties through to site safety, quality assurance and final handover, our approach is supported by established management systems, competent personnel and documented procedures.

  • Defined Roles & Responsibilities

Project responsibilities and statutory appointments are established at the outset, including Principal Contractor and Principal Designer duties where separately appointed.

  • Regulatory & Technical Compliance

We coordinate relevant statutory requirements, design information, building control processes and applicable technical standards with the appointed project team.

  • Health, Safety & Quality Assurance

Our management systems support risk assessments, site inspections, quality checks and the review of project risks throughout construction.

  • Documented Project Handover

Relevant testing, commissioning, certification, O&M information and project records are coordinated and issued in accordance with the project requirements.

Our compliance approach is supported by ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified management systems.

Programme control

Every education project has its own requirements. Our project management approach combines tailored construction programmes, coordinated resources and consistent reporting procedures to provide consultants and school estates teams with clear visibility throughout delivery.

  1. Project Scope & Requirements

Reviewing the project specification, programme requirements, site constraints and key construction risks.

  2. Pre-Construction Planning

Preparing site logistics, construction phase arrangements, risk assessments and project-specific procedures.

  3. Programme & Resource Coordination

Developing phased programmes, coordinating specialist trades and establishing project milestones.

  4. Quality Assurance & Commissioning

Coordinating inspections, testing, commissioning and defect management throughout the works.

  5. Construction & Progress Monitoring

Managing site activities, monitoring progress and providing regular updates to the consultant and school.

  6. Completion & Handover

Managing project completion, agreed area handovers and the provision of relevant certification and project records.
